Rapid Transit. (..for the moment, at least)

(photos by Lee Bey)

I've been getting around town on trains since that maniac ran a redlight and wrecked my car in July. I'll get a replacement car soon, but for now I am enjoying the sights and sounds of public transit. It's quite a resource. A well-run, properly-funded mass transit system is one of the best tools to maintaining a well-planned and sustainable city and region. Now only if our lawmakers in charge of funding the system understood that.

I love your blog, and love your photos even more, but you if you are serious about urbanism you gotta leave your car at home and make transit a part of your life.

David: Thanks for reading and for the kind words! You know, one can be quite serious about urbanism and yet own a car. It's not an either/or situation. The trick is to use the car wisely and make it part of a balanced menu of transportation options. I won't use a car to get to work each day, or go visit the attractions downtown because I can catch Metra and the CTA from Beverly to the Aon Bldg. But I might use my car to visit my sister in Hoffman Estates on a Sunday afternoon. Stuff like that.

Lee when ever I come to Chicago I use the CTA. As a Torontonian I'm used to public transit. However Chicago's is far more extensive. It's a treasure.

I agree that it would be good for politicians to do something about this in Chicago and Toronto. Building more roads is only one solution not the only solution.
